The U.S. Social Security program is an old-age pension and health insurance fund for individuals who work and live in the United States. Some businesses in the U.S. use the social security number (SSN) as an identification number.
There are special requirements when international students apply to get a SSN. F-1 students must have a U.S. job before they can apply for the SSN. F-1 and J-1 students need to obtain a letter or signature from the international office located in Franklin Hall.
You will need the following documents to apply SSN:
o Social Security Employer Letter & International Office Letter
o Social Security Application Form
o Passport & I-20
o A second form of photo identification
o Social Security Employer Letter: This letter should be printed on the letterhead of the hiring department. Employer should complete and sign form. Student should bring form to the international office. If student is enrolled, the international office will give the student a letter from the office indicating that they are eligible to accept the position. Take both letters along with other documentation to the social security office
