-Prospects for a Fed rate increase this year are waning in the wake of lackluster readings on spending, inflation and jobs.
-Wal-Mart warned profits would fall as much as 12% next year amid heavy spending. The retailer's shares dropped 10%.

-Goldman's profit fell 36% in the third quarter, reflecting the bruising taken by its trading businesses.
-Citigroup posted better-than-expected earnings despite an industrywide drop in bond trading.

-United's new CEO was undergoing treatment in a Chicago hospital for a heart attack suffered Thursday.
-U.S. stocks ended the week with gains. The Dow industrials rose 74.22 points to 17215.97. Investor concerns about the looming U.S. debt-ceiling deadline rippled through the bond market.
