从国内带手机
目前全球的商用手机频率主要是四个，分别（850/900/1800/1900）。这就是我们通常听说的“三频”或“四频”手机的所指。
其中,亚洲及欧洲使用900和1800的频率，而北美洲使用的是850和1900。中国大陆主要是用900的。 由此可见，如果你是在国内买的手机，只要是插卡式的GSM手机，三频或是四频，那就已经可以在美国使用，畅通无阻了。但是信号会有信号不良的反应出现，尤其是像在Bloomington的小城镇的使用情况。
从国内带手机要想在美国使用，可以选择买电话卡或者加入美国的手机包月计划。但是只有AT&T 和 Cingular 有电话卡选择的服务。

手机如何带回中国用的问题

如果大家要把美国的手机带回国用，首先要注意的第一个问题，就是频段的问题。 CINGULAR或T-MOBILE给出的手机，从2频到4频的都有。这个你在开通服务取得手机的时候最好问清楚自己的手机是几频的。
2频的手机通常只支持850/1900。这两个都是北美洲的频率，所以，这种手机只能在美国国内换公司使用，无法带到中国。 3频的手机通常支持850/1900+1800或850/1900+900。全球四频中的其中三个。以上提到，由于中国是主要使用900，所以你如果是 取三频手机，那记得还要问一下这个手机是否具900频率，能否在中国使用。如果你的手机支持的是850/1900+1800，即俗称的美洲三频，那你带会 中国的话也可能收不到讯号。
4频的手机支持以上所有的频率，带回中国用是一点问题都没。

在美国使用手机有以下特点：

o 同一运营商网内通话是免费的。
o 运营商有free time ，就是免费时间，这个时间内打电话不收钱，一般是晚9点到第二天早6点。
o 美国没有长途的说法，本地、美国其他地区长途话费相同。
o 剩余时间转存使用，美国手机包月计划中，这个月打不完的分钟数可以累积到下一个月。

预付卡(PREPAID CARD)
类似国内的“动感地带”或是“神州行”这样的预付卡。和国内的使用方法一样，买一个新的号码，然后买充值卡充值进去就可以使用，没有固定的月费，用完了可以再充值或者直接把号码丢掉都行，轻松简便。但相对而言，这些预付卡都比较适合短期停留在美国的人，例如旅行者。如果你是国内念书，要长期呆在这边的话，预付卡的资费相对比较贵，不太划算。

手机月服务
美国有四大主要的手机服务商，分别是CINGULAR（前身为AT&T了），T-MOBILE，VERIZON和SPRINT。要想使用美国的网络，必先要加入“套餐”服务。好的套餐自然省钱，每个公司有不同的选择种类，具体请参考各大公司的网页。


个人计划(INDIVIDUAL)
个人计划，换言之，就是一个人使用。电话公司给你一个号码，每月向你征收一笔费用。例如，CINGULAR的$39.99个人月计划，包括450分钟的白天分钟数，夜晚9点到第二天早上6点之间国内通话免费，本月未用完的分钟数可以累计到下个月，而同公司的用户之间通话始终免费。

家庭计划（Family Plan）
如果你和你的朋友志趣相投，人品优良，并且短时间内（>2年）不会分道扬镳在此重点推出 family plan家庭计划，则是给家庭或是小团体使用的相对廉价的计划。家庭计划一般允许你最多开五个号码，五个人使用，五个人受同一个分钟数的限制，但只支付一份账单。

其优点是价廉物美，个别公司会根据政策赠送手机。缺点是需要团队一致向心力，并且有一个负责任的代表定期收缴话费。即时寒暑假离开美国境内，固定话费仍需交纳。

温馨提示：申请手机时，公司会向个人收取$500押金为防止有欠款案例发生，2年后归还。

1. Phone cards
There are many kinds of phone cards sold on the internet. You can buy it easily by credit cards online. You can use phone cards to call back to China, or your family can call you by using some international phone cards which also sold online or in China, such as 17900. Usually, it is cheaper for you to call back from U.S. Some good websites are listed for you to buy phone cards as follows:

You can also buy a very cheap phone card to call back to China in a Chinese store called O’bos around College Mall in Bloomington. There are two kinds. One is $10 for 500 minutes, and another is $18 for 1000 minutes, if you use cell phone.

If you use your phone in the dorm or apartment, then you can only use half of the minute’s time. However, these two have different deadline. You can choose one according to how often you need to use it. My recommendation is to buy it in O’bos, because it seems that it is the cheapest one and many people use it. It is very convenient.

There are some tips for you when you buy and use phone cards. As a rule, good calling cards cost more. The cheapest is usually the poorest in quality just like the way you go shopping. Occasionally you get a good card but that is because you are lucky. There is no guarantee that that kind of card will last long. Using calling card is like you drive at downtown, you are stopped constantly. But if you could manage to avoid rush hour, you can go as well as you are on a free way. Calling card can be frustrating because when you promise to call someone at certain time but it happens that was a "rush hour", you will never make it. Don't expect a calling card to do the job of AT&T or MCI phone lines. That's why it is cheaper. A tip I can give you is to use your calling card in the morning before 10am. Weekends and nights are the bad time to use calling card. My judgment on good calling card is you don't lose money on it though sometimes you are frustrated in the process of using them. You get what you have paid for.
So when you are to buy a calling card
o Check if the card has customer service number
o Date of expiration
o  Price
o  if it is risky to use it.
